Sum 41 frontman attacked

Sum 41 may have had a huge hit with the song “Fat Lip,” however apparently some of their detractors have taken the song title a bit too literally. That’s right, Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley had to be hospitalized in Japan, where the band is touring, after being attacked by three people in a bar.

The attack occurred last Thursday, and the band posted a message on their site Friday explaining the altercation. The post read: “Deryck Whibley Update: After an MRI scan, it appears Deryck has slipped a disc in his back once again. Despite doctor’s instructions, he has decided to play today’s show at Summer Sonic [festival in Tokyo and Osaka] regardless. Sum 41 will perform at 3:40pm.” However, shortly after, the following update was posted. “It is unfortunate to say, but Deryck Whibley is still in the hospital. He was attacked late last night in Japan.  We are waiting for results and we are hoping for the best.  Thanks for your support.”

This is an even bigger bummer when you consider the fact that Sum 41 were also forced to cancel three Warped Tour appearances this week after Whibley came down with a severe case of bronchitis that, according to the group, threatened to damage his voice “permanently.” We wish the best for Whibley and his bandmates by: jonah bayer
