Glee at top the Billboard chart

So it’s official, the biggest musical acts in the world right now are, uh, TV shows and movies. No, that’s not a typo— and this week’s SoundScan numbers are proof. A few years ago, a new album from Christina Aguilera would have been a lock atop the Billboard charts, however her fourth studio album, Bionic, debuted this week at number three behind the soundtracks for Glee and Twilight Saga: Eclipse respectively. The most amazing part is that this is the fifth Glee album to be released since the TV series was launched merely a year ago and yet, it still managed to sell over 150,000 copies during its first week— making it Glee’s third straight number one album.  Twilight Saga: Eclipse was close behind, selling 144,00 copies  making Bionic Aguilera’s lowest debut to date, with a lowly 110,00 copies sold. We’re thinking Aguilera’s decision to cancel her summer tour in order to concentrate on her acting career probably isn’t going to help the situation, either.

Musical purists need not despair however, because next weeks charts should be teeming with high-profile releases from newcomers like Drake and catalog artists like Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers-and if they’re outsold by the latest Now compilation, we’re officially retiring.by: Jonah Bayer
